Montessori education focuses on building independence, supporting social, emotional, and intellectual development, and fostering a love of learning.
The Montessori Toddler Program is focused on nurturing a young child’s budding independence and growing sense of self. Teachers work with children on sensory-motor development, vocabulary and early communication, toileting, and movement. At River Song, our Toddler program will incorporate aspects of our Peace and Art curriculum, providing early explorations for the work the child will continue in his or her primary classroom. Participation in the Toddler program gives your child the opportunity to prepare for the transition into the Primary classroom.
Our Montessori Primary Program (ages 3-6) focuses on building independence, supporting social, emotional, and intellectual development, and fostering a love of learning. The materials are designed to encourage repetition and self-correction, so children learn through their own exploration of a material, rather than from an adult telling them if they are correct. Head guides and assistants provide lessons in the areas of Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Math, Geography, Biology, Art, Music, and Peace Studies, as well as giving them tools to manage their interactions with others and their emotions. Guides observe and track each child’s progress, providing additional support or challenge as needed. During the work period, children work independently or in small groups, choosing work that interests them. Our work period also includes snack time and opportunities to work in our garden. Outside playtime occurs between the morning work period and lunch.
Our Enrichments Programs feature an annual ‘Spirit Animal Art Show” where students are matched up with a local artist to collaborate on an art piece which is exhibited in a gallery downtown Bend. We offer yoga, music, art, gardening, and a summer camp.
